Weekly TD-SCDMA Update January 12 - January 18

- China Mobile, which was assigned a TD-SCDMA license on January 7, 2009,  announced on January 12 that the company plans to launch a subsidy program worth 10 billion RMB (US$1.46 billion ; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) for TD-SCDMA mobile phone purchases, the Sina Tech News reported quoting the vice president of China Mobile, Lu Xiangdong. Additionally, Lu also reaffirmed that only CMMB (China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting)-based TD-SCDMA mobile phones will be awarded network access licenses, the Sohu IT News reported on January 13.

- Taiwanese mobile phone maker Dopod has debuted a high-end TD-SCMDA Smartphone based on the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform, aiming to tap the increasing demand for high-end phones, Sohu IT News reported on Januarys 16. The Smartphone, codenamed S700, is priced at 4,899 RMB (US$716.1) featuring 500 MHz processor , 2.8-inch QVGA (Quarter Video Graphics Array) screen display, and a 2MP (Megapixel) camera, according to the same source. The S700 was originally scheduled to hit the market in June or July, 2008.

Aside from Dopod, Samsung and Coolpad - which also have been issued permits to sell TD-SCDMA terminals - have launched high-end TD-SCDMA Smartphones as well. Meanwhile, Nokia' Symbian platform-based TD-SCDMA Smartphone is slated for commercialization by year-end 2009, the China Business News reported on January 15.
